blog break

my dearest friends and family-

i am taking a break from the blog for a bit (in case you hadn't noticed). although there are many fun and exciting events to share with you (lots of visitors, first anniversaries, trips home, etc), i find that my priorities have shifted a bit. between grad school and working, i find that i don't have much time to sit down and journal the fun events in my life. and, now i have this adorable husband that i don't get to see enough, and so i want to spend as much time with him as i can.

as the next autumn quarter of my life is upon me, i am saying farewell until december.

have a great fall. GO CARDS AND TIGERS!

sweet siena

Last weekend Mike and I hosted the Salinas family (Branden, Chelsea, and Siena). Branden was an invited speaker at a pharmaceutical conference here, so he flew out, and his girls came with him. In the last year, Chelsea and Branden have both finished their PhDs in chemical engineering, become parents, and moved from Boulder to Philly. We sure are glad they could take a little siesta here in Seattle with us.

I learned quickly, however, that there isn't much rest at all when you have an 11month old running around. Precious Siena was born 7-6-08, so she is just around the corner from her first birthday. This is my favorite picture of her from the weekend. Look at that smile and her 'whale spout' hair.

Sweet Siena. She has 7 teeth!

In this visit I noticed a definite shift in my relationship with Chelsea. In the past, we were sure to snap photos of ourselves with any chance we can get. Now we both take 40 pictures of sweet Siena to try to capture each adorable moment. After attempting to capture smiles, claps, crawls, cries, etc, I realized just how difficult it is to get her to face the camera. I now very much respect Chelsea's blog (http://www.salinasbaby.blogspot.com/) and her ability to get good pictures. I have also decided that I need a much faster camera before I have children.

On Monday morning, we girls packed up and headed to Alki Beach. I felt honored to witness Siena's first 'toes in the sand' moment. She was a little nervous at first, but after a while she dug right in and even tasted some. Her mommy and I tasted our grande, skinny, decaf, iced caramel macchiatos. It's amazing that we haven't lived in the same town since 1999 and our coffee preferences are still the same. Monday morning was amazing catch up/girl time for me. I LOVED it!

Miss independent. Forget the toddler sippie cup. I want to be a big kid. She actually does quite well!

She will be walking in no time. Look at her getting a kick out of herself.

Siena playing with Uncle Mike. She brought her favorite toys: plastic Easter eggs. I love watching him with kids.

We did manage to capture one self portrait with the Puget Sound in the background. Spending Monday with Chelsea and baby girl Siena was the absolute highlight of my month. It was so refreshing to have precious girl time!

The Salinas Family in front of a dilapidated yet 'quintessentially Seattle' fishing boat. Thanks so much for making the trip across the country!

430

this is the number of calories in a cinnamon crunch bagel from panera. this does not include the cream cheese or my hazelnut coffee with a splash of cream. wow. i must say this is the first time in my life i have ever been disappointed in panera. what made them think i would want to know the dirty details of my a.m. indulgence? it's a good thing i don't eat them more than once every few months.

needless to say, i went for the french toast bagel (only 330 calories), the lite cream cheese, and straight up black coffee.

back to studying.. and perhaps a mid-afternoon run.

april showers bring may showers

As I write that title, know that I am going to post some pictures of a sunny day in April. Know also that Seattle, by and large, has remained true to its reputation. It's been rainy and dreary since the beginning of spring. I always tell my mom that the weather didn't bother me the first year because I was falling in love. Now I suffer from SAD (Seattle Affective Disorder). Enough of my dreary attitude.. let me tell you about some great things that have been going on these last few weeks!
The beautiful UW Quad with cherry blossoms in abundance. I honestly can not get enough of them. My friend Angie (16weeks pregnant) was in town this past week, and I was so glad she could see Seattle in 'bloom'. We had a great time catching up and day dreaming about names and little pink booties. She is one of my many friends who are approaching motherhood.. I think I am getting the fever. I have a new plan for 'when' to start 'trying' about every day. If Mike knew how much I thought about babies, he would just laugh at me.
All is not quiet on the school front. This quarter is a force to be reckoned with. I've had to start skipping classes in order to have enough time to scramble my assignments together and get them turned in. It's the women's health quarter, though, and so I am really enjoying our lectures. I've been learning how to do paps in clinicals, which may sound gross, but I get super excited. The cervix is hard as heck to find, and I have lots of practice to do. Does anyone want me to practice on them? It's such a pleasant procedure...
Need I say this again... look how cute he is! Can you believe we have been married for 8 months? Time sure flies. We are soaking up this marriage thing, and we feel BLESSED beyond measure. We've learned that we will approach most every situation (eating corn on the cob, driving directions, making the bed, scheduling) from a completely opposite perspective. Thus, we are appreciating the many opportunities to laugh, love, and learn. We are heading to STL in 12 days for a wedding. We can't wait to see our family and get a Cardinal baseball game in!

I love Public Health

This is a great, short plug for my passion in health care. It seems like the simple things, but they are truly what 'HEALTH' care is. Our nation practices ill care. It's time for a change.
